Who we help

We house adults aged 18 and over who need a safe place to live. Some people only need a room. Others also need support to settle in.

People we house

Care leavers

Young people who were in care at 16 or 17 and are moving into their own home. Until they turn 25, care leavers can get help with rent at the one bedroom rate.

People leaving a hostel or refuge

People who have lived in a hostel for homeless people or a refuge for at least three months since the age of 16. This time does not need to be recent.

Survivors of domestic abuse

People who have experienced domestic abuse from a partner, former partner or relative since the age of 16. A letter from a professional supports the claim.

People leaving prison

People aged 25 to 34 who are managed under MAPPA level 2 or 3, and other prison leavers who need a stable home.

Survivors of modern slavery

People who have a positive conclusive grounds decision from the Home Office.

Disabled people

People who get the daily living part of PIP, the middle or high rate care part of DLA, or Armed Forces Independence Payment.

People aged 35 and over

Single adults aged 35 or over who need an affordable home of their own.

Couples and families

Couples and families who need an apartment or a house, including households moving on from temporary accommodation.

People who are homeless

People who are sleeping rough, staying with friends or about to lose their home.

Help with rent for a room

Most single people under 35 who rent privately get help with rent at the shared accommodation rate. This is the lowest rate.

The groups above are exempt from that rule. On Universal Credit, people who are exempt, and everyone aged 35 or over, can get help at the one bedroom rate even when they rent a room in a shared house.

Good to know

  • Help with rent is never more than the actual rent.
  • People who claim housing benefit instead of Universal Credit usually get the shared rate for a room in a shared house.
  • Rooms in supported exempt accommodation follow different rules. See Housing and rent.
  • The council or the Department for Work and Pensions decides every claim. We help each person make theirs.

Support we can offer

  • Setting up and managing benefit claims
  • Budgeting, paying bills and avoiding debt
  • Cooking, cleaning and looking after a home
  • Linking with GPs, mental health and drug and alcohol services
  • Education, training and finding work
  • Finding and moving on to a long term home

We provide housing support. We do not provide personal care.
